This is done by purchasing puts and calls. With a call, you are buying the option to be able to purchase the stock in the future for a price that has been established in the present. With a put, you are doing the opposite, and you are purchasing the option to sell that stock in the future at a price that has been set in the present.

In other words, when you buy a call option, you make money when the stock goes up in value but when you buy a put option, you make money when the stock drops in value.
